How to Start Using Affinity (Exploring Vector, Pixel & Layout, All in One App)

How to start using Affinity - Made By James

Good humans of the internet: in this video I wanted to do something a little lighter.

Rather than a deep, step-by-step tutorial, I thought it’d be more useful to simply play inside Affinity and show you how I move between Vector, Pixel, and Layout tools in one place, and why that way of working has changed how I design day to day.

If you’re new to Affinity, or still finding your feet, this post is here to give you some context around what you’re seeing in the walkthrough and how these tools fit together in real work.

Why I Like Exploring Affinity This Way

One of the biggest mindset shifts with Affinity is understanding that you’re not jumping between different apps, you’re staying in one environment and changing how you work with your files.

That means:

  • Fewer interruptions
  • Less exporting and re-importing
  • More experimentation without commitment

This video is about seeing what’s possible, not mastering everything at once.

Vector Tools: Drawing, Shaping, and Building Marks

Pen, Pencil, and Node Editing

I spend a lot of time in vector work, especially when building logos and identities. The pen tool, pencil tool, and node editing behave exactly how I expect them to… clean, responsive, and fast.

One thing I really enjoy is how fluid drawing can feel, even with a mouse.

Stroke Width and the “Hand-Drawn” Feel

The stroke width controls let me introduce pressure, variation, and character into vector lines. This is especially useful when I want something to feel a little rougher or more human before tightening it up.

Image Trace: From Sketch to Vector

Image Trace has been a big one for me. Being able to drop in artwork, trace it cleanly, and immediately start editing vectors saves a huge amount of time. It’s ideal for sketch-to-vector workflows and experimenting with mark-making without friction.

Pixel Tools: Playing With Live, Non-Destructive Effects

Live Filters That Stay Editable

When I switch into Pixel tools, what excites me most is how live filters behave. Effects like distortion or twirl sit in the layer stack and stay editable, so they’re not destructive.

That means I can:

  • Try something
  • Dial it up or down
  • Move it to affect one layer or everything underneath

All without committing too early.

Why This Matters

This kind of non-destructive play is where better ideas come from. You’re not worried about “ruining” anything, you can just explore.

Layout Tools: Where Everything Comes Together

Working With Pages and Documents

Layout tools are where Affinity really starts to shine for brand work. Whether it’s brand guidelines, pitch decks, or printed pieces, everything you’d expect from a layout tool is here: pages, masters, bleeds, and preview modes.

Editing Embedded Files Live

This is one of those features that makes you stop and smile.

You can place a file (like a logo), open it, edit it, and see those changes update live inside your layout without saving, exporting, or relinking anything.

For brand documents and client work, this speeds things up dramatically.

Text Wrap and Responsive Layouts

Text wrapping around objects works beautifully and responds instantly as you move or scale elements. It’s one of those small details that makes layout design feel calm instead of clunky.

Why This All Matters for Real Design Work

I’m not interested in software tricks for the sake of it.

What I care about is:

  • Fewer barriers between thinking and making
  • Tools that encourage exploration
  • Systems that support better decisions, not necessarily faster output

Affinity gives me space to experiment across vector, pixel, and layout work without breaking my flow, and that’s a big reason I love using it.

Final Thoughts

This video (and this post) is really just an invitation to explore.

You don’t need to master everything. You don’t need to know every feature. Start by playing. Start by noticing what feels good. Let the tools support how you think and work.

I’ve got more Affinity videos coming, my friends: deeper dives, real client work, and end-to-end examples, but sometimes it’s nice to just open the app and see what happens.

Thanks for being here.
