DOES SOCIAL MEDIA MATTER? DOES IT ACTUALLY MAKE YOU ANY MONEY? IS IT GOOD FOR YOUR SOUL AND CREATIVITY?
Social media is such an interesting topic as everyone has very different opinions on it – and i will not lie to you – I fall in and out of love with it almost daily… I often post without knowing I am posting as it’s become such a part of my routine – I forget what life was like before it.
Even though my love for it changes like the wind, why do I still put so much effort into it?
The day my perspective changed was the day I started calling it a “marketing platform” rather than social media. This little change of language made my relationship with it shift from personal to professional and in turn made me use it differently.
So how about I answer the questions above from my own personal perspective!?!
DOES SOCIAL MEDIA MATTER?
In all honesty I don’t think it does in the whole grand scheme of things. I know friends and fellow business owners who are not using social media that are doing very well in life, and they are very happy!
But to give you a little more context around that… they are not in the digital space or creative industry! and I think thats where it starts to matter! If you are in the business of promoting, visualising, creating, marketing, branding or whatever else we all may possibly do… I personally feel it’s importance starts to rise (to almost a necessity)
I don’t think you have to create daily content by any means, but I do feel that consistently marketing yourself and your business online will positively impact your business and open up new opportunities.
DOES SOCIAL MEDIA ACTUALLY
MAKE YOU MONEY?
It is difficult to quantify in all honesty, but if done with consistency I believe that you can create multiple streams of income with social media.
Firstly by sharing your work and ideas you are able to connect with people who need your skills all over the world, many of my clients may have never found me without a social media presence.
Many of you may feel that this is not the case, and for many years it was the same for me! social media did not bring me any clients for the first couple of years and I made close to nothing. But, overtime, one client turned into two – two into ten – and now it equates to hundreds of thousands over a year.
Then there is another side to this… when you grow an audience, you have what other brands want! DATA (AKA – an audience). I personally have not jumped into the world of the paid partnerships stuff but its a great way to make some extra income if done with the right intentions.
IS SOCIAL MEDIA GOOD FOR THE
SOUL & YOUR CREATIVITY?
POW…this is a question that could be debated for years to come!!!
I think there are better ways to nurture your creativity and soul… most of those ways are to do with staying as far away from social media as possible – haha.
But, what it does allow us all to do is learn from people that we may have never found before, we can get inspired by other creators, I have personally made friends for life with people I have met through social media… these elements above defiantly nourish my soul to the max.
My final thoughts and takeaways for you are this;
- Use it for business and keep your personal life for you
- Define why you are using social media
- Don’t post every day!
- Don’t make it your only form of marketing
- Don’t take it too seriously
- Have days when you don’t even look at it
- clearly define some targets and boundaries
- Be consistent with your content and message
- Don’t compare yourself to other creators
- Being yourself on social media is powerful
